Coffee Storage
One of the most commonly asked questions about Specialty Coffee is how to store it correctly. A good question; after investing in a high quality product, wanting to keep it fresh is understandable. Here are a few easy recommendations to keep your coffee as fresh as possible—
- Avoid pre-grinding coffee. Keep it whole bean until just before brewing. This will keep it much fresher and improve shelf life. Once coffee has been roasted, it starts to degrade; grinding it accelerates the process so whole bean is the way to go.
- Only buy what you need. Make sure you can use all of the coffee you buy within a month, although two weeks is even better.
- Check that the bag has a roast date so that you know how old it really is.
- Never store coffee in the refrigerator or freezer. This will draw out moisture and make the beans go stale much faster. Coffee will also pick up any strong odors from the fridge, making your coffee taste funny.
- Find a place to store your coffee that is away from light, heat and humidity. A kitchen cabinet away from the stove or fridge works best.
- Keep coffee in its original bag. Once opened, remove as much air as possible from the bag and place it in an airtight container before putting it in the cabinet.
