Our Brickyard® Blend Coffeewas made especially for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Although it is available year round, we pay special attention to the blend during race season. Since this year marks the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, we will take a deeper look at the development of the blend. As part of the Hulman and Company family of businesses, Rex Roasting Co. carries on a tradition of producing high quality coffee that was originally established in the 19th Century as Hulman Coffee Company. This company produced the same Rex and Farmers Pride Coffee brands we still make today. We carry on this tradition by providing coffee to the Speedway, retailers, wholesalers, offices and in our online store.
Originally developed in conjunction with the 100th Anniversary of the Race in 2011, the Brickyard Blend has since become one our most requested house blends. The blend is fairly straightforward—two roasts of a medium density South American coffee blended with a small amount of a light roasted high-density Central American coffee. This blend is smooth and cocoa forward with overtones of toasted malt and citrus that become more defined as the cup cools. Mild aromatics of roasted nut and cocoa finish out the experience and overall the blend is balanced and sweet. The idea was to create an easily drinkable coffee that could be brewed in any manner that was rewarding for any occasion. We think we succeeded.
Brickyard Blend is great on its own, although it also pairs well with cream. Pastry style desserts complement the sweet and slightly smoky flavor profile, while cream based desserts highlight the cocoa and citrus notes. There really isn’t anything that wouldn’t pair well with this coffee. It is especially good as a cold brew and we’ve even made cocktails with it. For a few recipes using the cold brewed blend, look into our contributions to the Clabber Girl “Brickyard to Backyard Cookbook” now available in the online store and at the Speedway.
We currently have Brickyard blend available in 2 lb. bags, 12 oz. bags and single serve portions.
